Those linking the major cities of Paphos (Pafos), Limassol (Lemesos), Larnaca (Larnaka) and the capital, Nicosia (Lefkosia), are major
dual carriageways.
Other significant roads are also of good quality although they may not have good verges or pavements.
Many roads are better than they are shown on maps as there has been significant recent road improvement.
However, there are also more challenging, unmetalled roads, mostly around the Akamas Peninsula or in the mountains. These may be rutted and have
significant potholes so it is worthwhile having a 4WD for clearance in these areas. Ensure, also, that your car insurance covers the kind of
roads where you are driving.
Areas within a day tour of Paphos include the following:
the Akamas Peninsula
the northern coast around Latchi, with its delightful harbour and easy access to the Baths of Aphrodite
parts of the Troodos mountains including Cedar Valley and Mount Olympus
the "Birthplace of Aphrodite"
the inland villages around Kathikas
Kouris dam
Limassol, Larnaca or Nicosia (further afield but good roads)
the monasteries of Ayia Neophytos, Chrysorroyiatissa and Kykkos
Kolossi Castle, built by the Knights Hospitallers in 1210
Archaeological sites such as Kourion.
